"Look", a show by Grant Brittain and Josh Higgins at Subtext Gallery July 30th

"Look" is a show with my great friend and poster extraordinaire, Josh Higgins. It's happening this Friday night, July 30th at 6-10PM at Subtext Gallery in downtown San Diego. Along with Josh's music and charity posters, I will be showing portraits of skateboarders, both past and present work. All work will be for purchase along with a limited edition show poster and a few tees. The show runs through August 29th.
Adrian Demain will be taking us on a dreamy guitar voyage, so that's an added treat.
Oh yeah, appetizers by The Tractor Room and there will be some great beer, no friggin' PBR Grandpa beer!

We were shooting at Shred Ranch and I was shooting Danny Dicola frontside 5-0 pivoting when his dog ran right beneath him.
Everyone gasped when Danny was stalled on top of the wall, he had no clue what was going on behind him. His pooch ran across and he came down and missed a doggy disaster.

Tom Penny- the one that got away!

It was 1995. Went to Huntington Beach skatepark, the one next to the high school. Tom Penny rolled up and wanted to jump down the stairs across the street next to the police station.
It was kind of a bust, it would have to be a quick one.
I set up my lights and walked over to a good spot to shoot from, I was looking down at my camera, making some adjustments, f-stops and such when I heard the distinctive sound of rolling wheels. I raised my head and saw Tom rolling towards the set of stairs and was barely able to raise my camera and fire off a frame of film. He made the kick flip with ease and we got the boot and I knew I didn't have the shot. I had no time to focus my zoom lens. The photo was out of focus so I never used it. "If it's not in focus, it's out of focus.", Stacy Peralta. Photos of Tom Penny are rare and they rarely don't get used. A while later Swift went back and shot a frontside flip at the same spot, so I guess it wasn't in my cards all the way around.

Just a quarterpipe

It was 1985 and I was on my first tour of Europe and staying at Bruno Peeters' parent's house in Antwerp, Belgium. Kevin Staab was staying there too. This ollie was shot on the quarter pipe at the shitty little park nearby. This photo ended up as the Transworld logo and used as a banner, end dot and business card. You never know what little shot will become iconic.

I have had the fortune to have been in the right place at the right time through the years.
Sure, part of getting the right shot is Skill, but I count myself lucky for being around Skateboarding in a golden era, the 80s.
All I had to do was load film in my camera, move a couple of lights and the rest is history.

Skate Photographer's Etiquette And Technique Or Lack Thereof

The fisheye lens has been the skate photographer's staple lens of choice for over 30 years since the late, great Warren Bolster(RIP) first captured images of the 70s skate legends on film. The fisheye is an essential tool when shooting skateboarders. Skateboarding is one of the few photographic subjects where the fisheye is used extensively. The lens has its uses and misuses. Many years ago, I can remember Thrasher's photographer, Mofo lecturing and regulating the younger photographers about their bad habit of not looking through their viewfinders, holding the camera out at arm's length and just shooting willy-nilly anything that moved. I admit, I was guilty of it in my early days of shooting. Making skate photos is no different than making any kind of photos. Photography is an artform and certain elements must all come together to make a nice photo, a certain amount of skill in operating the camera is also essential. In skate photography, the action, the light, the vantage point, the exposure and the composition are the main ingredients neccessary in creating an adequate skate photo. Anyone can learn the technical basics of the camera. I have checked out thousands of other photog's photos and the ones that have really stood out are the ones where the composition of the photo really put it over the top. The photo had balance to it, the horizon was straight, not tilted, arms and legs and boards not cropped out, it was composed. You can't possibly compose a shot if you are not looking through the viewfinder, that's why the manufacturer put it on the camera! Very few of those haphazardly taken shots come out. I was compelled to write about the fisheye and its proper usage after shooting at the Protec Pool Party yesterday. I was amazed and shocked that the old ways of shooting without looking through the viewfinder had again raised its ugly head. Ok, it was very crowded on the deck of the combi pool, five to ten photographers lined up at each trick spot. That's just part of shooting a big contest where anyone with a camera(phone) can obtain a wristband(or not) and sit shoulder to shoulder and elbow to elbow with skate photographers who have paid their dues to skateboarding over the years. Well, that's another story, back to not looking through the viewfinder. I hadn't really witnessed this nasty habit in a long time, I think a Munster Monster Mastership in Germany in the mid 90s was the last time, the habit had spread from the States to Europe, our gift to them. I thought it had thankfully died out until yesterday, it's back with a vengeance! Unfortunately, the practice of not looking through the viewfinder not only affects the practitioner's photos, but also affects the photographers' photos around them. In one instance, I had a photo framed(composed) and then had a hand holding a camera come into frame from Stage Right and at the same time a photographer walking by, stopping and taking a photo with camera held at waist level in front of me.
I actually shook my head rapidly from side to side like in the cartoons, I was amazed at the lack of etiquette, skill and manners. It was unbelievable. I finally had to call off one guy after he repeatedly ruined several of my shots by sticking his hand and camera into my viewfinder frame. This isn't all about ME, I saw this action committed over and over again to many of my peers and it's simply NOT COOL!
My advice to novices is to learn the rules of photography first and to realize what is an acceptable way to act when shooting around other photographers.

Finally turning Pro!

Club Mumble just turned me pro, about time. Now I can stop flying Coach and get to start trashing hotel rooms.
Bob Kronbauer at Mumble Mag got together with my friends at Powell's SkateOne and my bros at The Skateboard Mag and presented me with an honorary Little Giants Pro skateboard deck. Don't fence The Gonz out

Gemco Bank was this one hit bank in a residential neighborhood in South Oceanside not too far from the office.
Shot The Gonz, GSD, Tod Swank and Miki Vuckovich there. The city tried all sorts of ways to make the spot unrideable, motor oil, rough cement and finally a double fence. That did the job, another beauty of a spot rendered unskateable, you know the story, you have a similar story. Hate "The Man", love The Gonz and his frontside boneless!

Ray Underhill Wheels from Powell and Momentum

Our dear friend, Ray Underhill passed away after a 2 year battle with cancer a few months back. Ray was like a brother to his many friends in the skate world. Ray was the nicest person you could ever meet, no exaggeration. George Powell at Skate One and Momentum Wheels have joined together to produce the Ray Underhill wheel, the proceeds earned will go to Ray's beautiful family, wife, Kerry, son, Keaton and daughter Olivia to help with Ray's medical bills.

20"x24" Polaroids

Tim Mantoani is a hot commercial photographer in San Diego who owns a 20"x24" Polaroid camera.
Tim is currently working on a photo project/book/show, Behind Photographs which focuses on renowned photographers(not that I am renowned) shot with their iconic images. I chose my Chris Miller Pole Cam photo as my iconic image, it's one of my favorite images. These cameras are amazing, they are the size of a dishwasher(the machine) on a trolley and the Polaroid film comes in 40 and 60 foot rolls and each image is 20"x24" straight out of the camera. I have had the privilege of shooting with one of these Mammoth cameras on a couple of occasions and they are simply mind-blowing. The bad news is that Polaroid is ceasing film production and these cameras will go the way of the Dodo, a victim of the Digital Age. RIP.

Travels

The best thing about shooting photos for a magazine is the travel. Some of my best friends I have today are the people I traveled with or met along the way.
This is a photo I shot of Pierre Andre in Fuji City, Japan in 1988. We were in Japan for a month and had a Blast!

Had my first solo show in 2003 in San Diego

My friend Josh Higgins, Art Director Extraordinaire invited me to do a solo photo show at the AIGA Gallery in downtown San Diego in September of 2003. I presented 20+ years of my favorite photography, skateboarding and my recent Polaroid 20x24 photos. Josh curated the show, he did a book, tee shirts, posters and the PR, I was blown away by the turn-out. We gave out 500 books, the line to get in went around the corner(700 people!), had some drinks, some yummy food, some great jazz and my family, friends and skate stars all showed up to support me.

A week later I quit Transword Skateboarding Magazine after 20 years of dedication.

The highs and lows of life, you never know what the future may hold.

So, it turns out that Mike Youssefpour didn't go to the doctor on the coast that night. He drove his stick shift truck one armed back to LA and went to the doctor 2 days later(with no pain killers yet!). He walked in and said that he thought that he might have broken his wrist. When he held it up for them to see, they said, "You think?". They did an x-ray and it was for sure broken. They wanted to operate and Mike said the only way they could operate was with him on no pain killers and Mike wanted to be awake. The Doctor said he couldn't do that, it would be inhumane and probably have some liability issues. The Dr. agreed to try to set it without pain killers. He put Mike's arm in one of those elevated traction sling dealies and put it back into position with Mike screaming obscenities all the while. Yikes!

Mike Youssefpour is a Badass!

There are plenty of crazy stories about our friend Mike Youssefpour. He's an eccentric dude and has a lot of little idiosyncrasies, rituals and phobias. I love the guy, he's funny and really cares about things and friends.

Saw him two nights ago at the Romona Rumble contest as I was walking to my car after shooting photos.

He had his wrist wrapped in ice and when he showed his wrist to me, I was amazed he wasn't at the ER, his wrist was tweaked! Broken or dislocated, it was bent. He informed me that he had done it earlier in the day and gone to Tri City hospital in Oceanside some 40 miles away, got tired of the wait in the ER and drove straight back to the contest. Mike doesn't take pain killers, he's gnarly like that. He then followed me back the 40 miles back on country curvy roads to Encinitas where he was supposedly going to an Urgent Care. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't.

The Best Skateboarder?

In the late 70s Chris Strople was considered to be one of the best skaters in the world, I always thought that.

He was at the Del Mar Skate Ranch from its opening day and even before it opened.

I spent a lot of time with Chris and Tom "Wally" Inouye and witnessed some heavy moments.

Chris is skating again and the skate world is that much happier.

I shot this photo in DMSR's halfpipe in early 80s and edgers don't get much edgier than this!

It's October and the weather's changing

The Pole Camera

1987- I had always wanted to shoot a skate photo with a pole cam. I think I got the idea from a photo a surf photog had shot. I mounted my Nikon FM2 with a 16mm fisheye on a tripod head and mounted that on a mono-pod and hooked up a squeeze bulb shutter release with the hose coiled around the pole. I shot a roll of black and white and a roll of color, one shot on each came out nicely. I really wanted to get our two shadows in the photo as a reference to show how far above coping Chris Miller’s frontside air was and to show that I was using a pole cam.
